If you have issues while you sleep such as snoring and sleep apnea, you may benefit from an oral appliance prescribed by your dentist. However, you may not even know you have these issues in the first place. Luckily, your dentist can help you understand your sleep problems, get to the bottom of their causes, and find the relief you want with an oral appliance. Find out more about oral appliances and how they can benefit you with Dr. Steven Syrop at locations in Westchester and Manhattan, NY.
What is an oral appliance?
An oral appliance is worn in the mouth during sleep and slightly shifts the jaw forward. These appliances treat snoring and sleep apnea. Oral appliances fit into the mouth much like an orthodontic retainer or a mouthguard you wear while playing sports or to prevent teeth grinding. Oral appliances are often used in combination with other treatments like CPAP machines.
How does an oral appliance work?
The oral appliance fits into the mouth to reposition the jaw and pull the tongue off of the back of the throat. This helps to keep the airway open while sleeping, preventing issues like snoring and sleep apnea symptoms. Some oral appliances reposition the jaw and pull it forward to prevent airway collapses while other appliances hold the tongue in place to prevent it from falling back to block the airway.
