It is important to find the best treatment for your sleep apnea to keep your condition under control and get the good night’s sleep you deserve. But what is the best treatment for your condition? In many cases of sleep apnea, an oral appliance can help control your symptoms of sleep apnea. Find out more about oral appliance treatments with Dr. Steven Syrop with offices in Manhattan and Briarcliff Manor, NY.
Do I have sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea causes pauses in the breathing during sleep, called apneas. This condition, if left untreated, can cause serious complications or even death. Most cases of sleep apnea are obtrusive sleep apnea, or OSA. This occurs when something blocks the airway, often the back of the tongue. Central sleep apnea, or CSA, occurs when the brain fails to send signals to breathe to the lungs, causing apneas. Mixed sleep apnea occurs when both OSA and CSA are present. You may have sleep apnea if you experience excessive snoring, find yourself waking suddenly while gasping or choking, or have insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness.
How does an oral appliance treatment work?
One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea is a CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, machine. The machine goes over the nose and mouth while the patient sleeps and sends a gentle stream of air through the airway to keep it from collapsing. However, there are other, less invasive options. An oral appliance fits into your mouth and is custom made to ensure the most comfortable fit. The appliance pulls the bottom jaw forward. This relieves the obstruction of the airway by pulling the back of the tongue off of it.
